Ink Blot Fashion is in!

Who would have thought, while I was creating my first ink blot design t-shirt, that ink blot fashion was hitting the runway?

{Did you know} Ink blot designs are the newest trend in fashion and can be seen in clothing lines from top designers like Stella McCartney, Giles, Givenchy, and Pucci?

Rorschach inkblot dresses
(L to R): Hayden Panettiere (designer: Tibi), Lucy Hale (designer: Izmaylova) & Anna Faris (designer: Preen)

Check these out

There's even a Rorschach blots umbrella! Who knew??

::A different spin on ink blot::
if you look closely you can see the ink blot pattern throughout. Almost tie-dye-ish, but just almost.

::These next two designs show yet another take on ink blot design::
kind of an ink drop look.

McQueen's dress still shows a symmetrical design, even though his approach is a bit different.

While Peter Som's design doesn't appear to be symmetrical, just blotted (not sure what it would look like if the fabric was just laid out - maybe it would be symmetrical?)

::And yet another version of ink blot design, is more of mirror image.::
Ink blot is generally random but symmetrical.
These designs are purposeful and symmetrical.
Like an artist painting one side of her canvas, and folding it over to create an exact mirror image.

And why not put it on a purse?

So in case you thought I might have lost my marbles with all this ink blot talk? Looks like I'm right on target. But with all these different takes on ink blot design? Looks like I've still got more to try.

Ink blot Onesies: Wearable Psychology

This coming month is going to be so much fun. I have lots of cool ink blot projects to share and a giveaway to announce!

First, I'll start with my newest past-time, Ink blot Onesie Designs. I call it Wearable Psychology.

These little beauties are the perfect mini canvas and so much fun to make!

Here's a closer look at each one

I'll start with sparkling orange pearl.   I see two dancers.  What do you see?

{Watch} to see how it was made (this vid only uses still shots but the other videos are action)

Next is pink. Good thing it turned out to look like ballet slippers.  Do you see that too?

{Watch} to see how this ink blot design was made-

Now I had to have one that was black. When I think of original ink blots I think black.   I see a little elf in this one.  Do you see him too?

The next couple designs I used two colors

I liked this combination of turquoise and red. Kind of reminds me of American Indian designs.  In this one I see two sets of birds. How about you?

The final design actually incorporates three colors, since blue and yellow mixed to create a bit of green.

Each onesie is for sale in my {etsy shop}. I thought it would be fun for my customers to see how their designs were made.

So much more to ink blot fun to come, so stay tuned!

Ink blot-t-shirt making: Layering color

A few days ago I summed up the ink blot t-shirts I've created so far.  But as I hung them one-by-one in my closet, I had a nagging feeling. I wasn't totally satisfied.

Like ice cream without the topping. Pizza without the rootbeer.

So I pulled out my fabric paints again. I had to get it right before I could say finito. It would end up being triple layer ink blot designs. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Enter: senior froggy shirt. Call me girly, but I don't want to wear a shirt that looks like an amphibian. There. I said it.

Round 1: where it all began

Round 2: make less frog-like. Add more paint blobs.

Round 3: Take out the frog. It was better, but its beady little eyes were still staring at me. Add a little more paint.

Much better.
Now I see birds.
I can live with birds.

INK BLOT TRIPLE PLAY #2
Enter: Space Invader; a.k.a paint spatter
I thought I'd fixed this one in my last ink blot post, but alas, you can't deny nagging doubt.

Round 1: spatter creation

Round 2: adding turquoise

Great addition, but not quite there.
Something whispered "pink".

Round 3: adding pink. The finishing touch.

I see feathers, hearts, flowers, maybe even a bird or two. I like this even better. Thank you pink.

The closet is ready for you now.

*Stay tuned for some exciting new projects with ink-blot-designs AND an upcoming give-away! Gotta share the love!

Fabric Cutting Table: what do you use?

Forever and a day I've needed a table to cut my fabric on.

I've cut fabric sprawled out on the floor.
Hunched over the coffee table.
Down on my knees on the kitchen linoleum.
Knee high to a tv tray.
You name it, I've probably cut fabric on it.

Well, last night as I was cutting out terrycloth and flannel to make an order of washcloths, I reached my limit. Trying to cut out precise squares on anything other than a reasonably sized table is more of a chore than it ought to be. So I said out loud for the umpteenth time, "I really need a table to cut my fabric on!" (and yes, you could probably hear the exclamation point).

My husband, eager to please his woman in distress, jumped on the computer and announced that he'd found something on slickdeals. It was a camping table. "Uh, honey, I sew. I don't camp."
I had my doubts.

It turns out, this Coleman camping table was on clearance (to my husband's delight) from $50 down to $11. It was 32" x 48", fold-able and light weight for easy storage, and had an adjustable height to 27" high. I'm short, so it just might work. So my prince-to-the-rescue ran off to Home Depot in the snow to get my cutting table.

I cut out a few more pieces of fabric using my new table and it wasn't too shabby. It's a little manly looking but was everything the package said it would be. Except, of course, for the fact that it will never see a campground. Welcome to my world.

*If you're interested in finding this deal (whether for camping or sewing), I've included it here, for as long as it lasts.
