Is the Emily Lex Watercolor Workbook Worth It? My Honest Review

Is paying around $25 for the Emily Lex Watercolor Workbook really worth it? If you've been eyeing her beautiful watercolor books but aren't sure whether they're worth the money, I thought I'd share my recent experience with the Autumn Watercolor Workbook.

Let me cut right to the chase: I have absolutely LOVED painting in this book (and I'm not even an artist, but she helps me feel like I am)!

I've always loved doing creative things, but lately, with all the stress in life, I've been making sure I take a little time to do something just for the fun of it. No pressure to make it perfect, no deadlines, and no expectations. Just the joy of sitting down and creating something pretty.

That's exactly what I've found with this watercolor workbook.

And the best part? You don't even have to know how to draw or paint!

What Is the Emily Lex Watercolor Workbook?

The Emily Lex Watercolor Workbook is, I'd say, a beginner-friendly painting book with illustrations that have already been sketched for you.

Think of it as a coloring book, only instead of crayons or colored pencils, you're painting with watercolors.

The Autumn Watercolor Workbook includes:

  • 12 pre-sketched fall illustrations

  • Step-by-step painting instructions

  • Examples of the finished paintings

  • Thick 120 lb watercolor paper

  • Spiral binding that allows the book to lay flat while you paint

  • 6.5 x 9-inch pages

The fall illustrations include pumpkins, leaves, flowers, and other pretty autumn designs.

You will need to purchase watercolor paints and brushes separately if you don't already have them. I actually have the watercolor paint palette that Emily Lex sells to go along with the workbook, but you can also find watercolor paints at your local craft store.

Is the Emily Lex Watercolor Workbook Easy for Beginners?

YES! And that's one of the things I love most about it!

I honestly never knew that artists often sketch out their design before putting paint to paper, but that's what makes this process so magical. You don't have to start with a blank piece of paper, the illustrations are already there for you, ready for you to paint.

AND not only that, but it also comes with example paintings so you can see exactly what each finished painting is supposed to look like. I love being able to experiment a little mixing colors and seeing how close to the sample painting I can get, or going my own way.

And when you're finished, you have a beautiful little painting that looks like you actually know what you're doing! Ha!

What I Love Most About This Watercolor Workbook

My finished pumpkin bouquet watercolor painting from the Emily Lex Autumn Watercolor Workbook, featuring pink flowers, autumn leaves, and an orange pumpkin.

Honestly, I think my favorite thing about this book has been how peaceful it feels to work on.

I've been painting the autumn illustrations this fall, and it's become one of my favorite creative activities.

I can sit down, pick up my paintbrush, and just have fun, with no expectations or stress. I love that I'm free to explore my creativity without worrying about the outcome and it's been so refreshing to do something creative just for the fun of it.

And I have to say, it's pretty satisfying to finish a painting and see how nice it looks (most of the time!) ha!

Is $25 Too Expensive for 12 Watercolor Paintings?

At around $25 for 12 paintings, that works out to just over $2 per painting (plus watercolors and brushes if you need those too). At first, that might seem like a lot for a workbook, but after spending time painting in mine, I really do think it's worth it!

I didn't want to have to buy separate watercolor paper, search for beginner tutorials online, and figure out what to paint when I could get a workbook with simple instructions, sample paintings, and designs already sketched out for me.

And that's what I like about this workbook - that so much of the work has already been done for you so you can just jump right in to the fun part.

I'm not paying just for 12 sheets of watercolor paper. I'm paying for an easy, relaxing creative experience that I can enjoy whenever I feel like it.

And sometimes that's worth spending a little extra money on.
