How to Applique a baby bib: two ways

How to Applique TutorialWhen I decided to make a personalized baby bib for my new nephew Henry, I wanted to try something different.

I had never done an applique and thought it would be a fun new technique to try.

I "just knew" I had all the right materials to get started.

{Bubble deflates.}
What I had was Fusible Interfacing.
What I needed was Fusible Web.

HOWEVER, NEVER FEAR!  It turns out there are actually 2 ways to do applique. Hallelujah! I don't have to go back to the store!

APPLIQUE METHOD 1: Iron-on with Fusible Adhesive or Web

The most traditional method of applique seems to be the iron-on method. I'm sure you've seen it a million times. A cute little applique, ironed down flat, with zig zag stitches around it to secure it in place. This method produces an applique with a stiffer feel than method 2. Here are a couple tutorials if this is your preferred method: How To Applique; & Applique Tutorial.

APPLIQUE METHOD 2: Applique using Fusible Interfacing

It turns out, I prefer this method for applique because it produces a softer feel than the regular iron-on applique.

Embroider baby name on bib using machine toolBefore I began with the applique, I added his name to the sailboat using my sewing machine's embroidery tool. I attached cut-away stabilizer to the back of the fabric to give it some stability, selected the letters, and let my machine do the rest.

And now it's just for him. Oh sweet Henry-boy!

On with the applique...
Fusible Interfacing has two sides, a smooth side and a dotted side (glue dots).

applique tutorial using fusible interfacingAs seen (left - top right photo), after tracing your shape on the smooth side of the interfacing, lay the dotted side facing the right side of your fabric and stitch directly on your line.

Cut away excess fabric and interfacing around your shape.

Next, cut a small slit in the interfacing so you can turn it right-side out. Be sure not to cut through your fabric.

Once right side out, your shape will be ready to iron-on to your project.

Lay your applique pieces in place and iron them down using a damp cloth (follow the instructions on the fusible interfacing package).

Appliques with fusible interfacing are softer than iron-on appliquesIn this image all my applique pieces have been ironed in place. Unlike Method 1, the applique fabric is not actually glued to anything. It is held in place from the backing, which has been glued down to the bib.

To secure the edges, zig zag stitch all the way around each piece. Test your machine and decide on which length and width you prefer. The zig zag should just catch the outer edge.

Finish applique with close zig zag stitches

The applique didn't turn out perfectly, it was my first time and all, but I didn't think Henry would mind. I attached the dark blue sail boat bib (a.k.a. the S.S. Henry) to a soft creamy terrycloth.

Sewn applique baby bib with flannel front and terry cloth back

I added a piece of matching light blue and white striped seer sucker fabric, with navy ribbon, to a heavy cloth diaper for a coordinating burp cloth.

My sister-in-law said how much she loved it and that it was just Henry's style.
Hugs and Kisses to Henry xo

Pillows for Children and Nursery Decor: Sarah Jane & Alice Kennedy Fabrics

Childrens bedroom decor and Baby Nursery decor Handmade Pillow cases
Since one of my New Year's Resolutions was to create new items for my etsy shop, I decided to go crazy and buy some cute new fabrics.

I can't get enough of the scrumptious prints from Designer Sarah Jane! I stumbled upon her art a few years back and fell in love with it all.

I bought one of her prints for my sewing room wall, where it hangs to inspire me each day.

I was tickled pink when I saw that she had expanded her artwork into darling collections of fabric: Children at Play and Out to Sea, which perfectly captures the whimsy and playful imagination of childhood. One of each please!

Okay, so I couldn't buy everything. But I wanted to.

I still have a few pillow cases to go, but here are the ones that are fresh in the shop!
Pillows are perfect for adding a soft, colorful touch to a child's bedroom, or adding something sweet and special for a baby nursery. They make lovely, personal baby shower gifts as well.

Baby girl or child pink mermaid pillow case perfect for nursery or bedroom

I made a pillow for my sister's baby girl Scarlett, and she absolutely loved it.
It's special because it not only brings auntie's love to her nursery, but it will grow with her and go on her big girl bed when it's time.

Great baby shower gift for new mom and new baby nursery decor

And we musn't forget playful little Pirates! Perfect for an adventurous little boy's room.

Baby shower gift idea: Pirates Life Pillow nursery decor

I bought one other really cute fabric from Sarah Jane's Children at Play collection and will share it when I've finished the last stitches.

Sigh.
Sweet aren't they?
I told you you'd love Sarah Jane's Fabric.

Now on to the owls...

Anyone else crazy for owls? Until recently, they've been a little under-appreciated. But now? Owls are everywhere! And I LOVE this colorfully bright owl fabric from Alice Kennedy.

It's such a feel-good fabric.  My mom instantly ordered a couple for herself! I don't blame her! I want them too!

Cute, colorful Owl Pillow for home decor, children's room or baby nursery, unisex

Thanks for indulging me and sharing in my excitement for my new products!

I have many more to share, that are just waiting to be sewn. Like I said, I went a little crazy and bought a few several probably more fabric than I should have, but WOW! Don't even get me started with the number of cute fabrics out there. At least I didn't buy ALL of them. Yet. *wink*

I love this little boy.

My darling nephew Drake is sporting his own personal, one-of-a-kind Ink Blot Onesie, made just for him.

His mom picked out the fabric paint color. My hands swirled out the design.

*See how the "biker dude" was made

Spring is on the horizon, and soon mommies everywhere will be pulling out there little short-sleeved onesies.

Colorful Baby Onesies

My Ink blot Baby Onesies have been so popular, I decided to put a few more in the shop. Instead of the black designs like I did more recently, I decided to do layered color. Aren't they cheerful?

uniquely designed baby onesies make great gifts

This one reminds me of Cherries. I like the combination of deep pink and Indian turquoise.

Wearable Art Baby Clothing

The swirls of this one reminds me of the pumpkin vines as they magically swirled to become Cinderella's carriage. I think the lavender and Indian turquoise compliment each other. Soft and sweet.

Hand painted Onesie by designer

I can't help but immediately see a court jester in this one. Or the face of a clown? Whatever it is, this deep pink and lamp black design makes me think "happy".

Onesie for baby shower gift

This one is tricky. I see either frogs or colorful caterpillars. The ocean blue and lamp black make a nice combination.

Gift for new mother painted Onesie in blue and black

It's funny how a design can jump right out at you. At first this light and dark purple design reminded me of little purple pansies. But all-at-once I saw the face of a smiling teddy bear. Do you see it too? Now that's all I see when I look at it - no more pansies.

Each of these "abstract art" painted Onesies are now in my shop. The feedback I've received is that they make really fun and unique baby gifts. Hope they make someone (or someone's baby!) happy too. ♥

Baby Bibs: Ink Blot Style

Don't tell me you didn't see this coming.
You knew I'd find something else to put an ink blot on.
And I did.

Introducing the newest ink blots in the shop.

::Ink Blot Baby Bibs::
All the smart babies are wearing them.

All bibs are made with soft white jersey on the front, and absorbent white terrycloth on the back.

And an easy on-off velcro closure.

One of my favorite parts about ink blot designs is figuring out what I see when I'm done.
1. Bunnies dancing
2. Spider smiling
3. People dancing
4. Storm trooper

{What do you see?}

Decorated Baby Onesie Bums

A week just isn't complete without making at least one Ink Blot Onesie.
After I drip and splatter the paint, it's like Christmas to open up the fabric and see what appears!

After the original purple "Orbiting Planets" Onesie was made (front design only), I decided to give it a little extra sumpin sumpin.

Who can resist a cute little decorated Onesie Baby Bum?
I certainly can't. And I figured since they make them with ruffles, why not Ink Blots?

It's kind of a two for one!
A fun little ink blot design on the front.

And a little surprise bum blot on the back.
What do you see?

This Onesie (size 18 months) is available here.
{Watch How This Ink Blot Designs was Made}:

*************************

But I couldn't stop with just one. So I made another.

This next one I see a Rabbit on the front and a Tiger on the back
...but maybe that's just me.
What do you see?

This 18 month Ink Blot Onesie is available here.
{WATCH to see how it was made}

Have you tried making your own yet? You can always buy yourself an Ink Blot Onesie Kit here. They're more fun that a barrel of monkeys! Or rabbits, or tigers, who knows what you'll come up with?!

Another ink blot onesie

The other day I needed to make another ink blot onesie.
It had been too long and I was going through withdrawals a little bit.

{Click here} to see more of my ink blot obsession.

I decided on Lovely Lavender.
Lavender reminds me of spring.
Maybe it's because I love Lilacs.

This design certainly doesn't look like lilacs.
Unless lilacs grow in outer space. But what do I know? I've never been there.

Up, up and away!
