How to Sew & Sell your Products on Etsy

Have you ever thought of selling the beautiful things you sew online, through Etsy or your own website?

courses to sell hand sewn products on Etsy
I considered that too, over 12 years ago, and I haven't stopped since!

My Etsy Success Story Sewing and Selling Online

Thousands upon thousands of washcloths later (I'm the founder of @FairfaceWashcloths by the way), I've decided to share everything I wish I had known when I first started sewing my own products and selling them on Etsy, and sharing it all with you!

The things I've learned and systems I've developed helped me not only scale my production from the low double digits to 1,000's of washcloths cut and sewn each cycle, but also expand to our own website, create more products, host a popular podcast and more.

How to Sew, Scale & Sell your Products on Etsy

I often say to myself, I didn't struggle through the learning process to get to where I am today, just to keep it to myself. It's meant to be shared! Just like our amazing washcloths are...and the reason I started sharing them in the first place was because they had helped me so much.

I want to give you the tools and information I wish I had 12+ years ago when I first started selling my handsewn products online, so I created a load of courses to help walk you through each step, called Cut, Sew, Grow!

Our CUT, SEW, GROW! Courses will be coming soon and I couldn't be more excited!

Delivering Fairface Washcloths™ to Oprah and Gayle King

Fairface Washcloths and Oprah and Gayle King
This weekend I had the unique and exciting experience of having my Fairface Washcloths™ gift sets delivered to Oprah and Gayle King, while they brought their special The Life You Want message to Seattle. How I wish I could have been able to deliver them in person to thank them for their incredible contributions and hear their inspiring words!

A friend of mine, who is the niece of the makers of Lisette L Pants that Oprah wears and loves, had the rare opportunity to go to the VIP tent where Gayle and Oprah greeted guests, took pictures and socialized with the Seattleites and others who traveled from near and far to attend this event.

My friend was able to hand-deliver these Fairface Washcloths combo cloth gift sets (so they could experience the best of both Fairface Washcloths styles) to Gayle! I feel so privileged for the chance to get products that mean so much to me into the hands of people I admire so much, and am so grateful for a friend willing to go out of her way for me!

Giving your etsy products to celebrities

fairface washcloths, celebrities, branding, product inserts and marketing strategiesPicture your handmade etsy products (& here) in the hands of two of the world's most influential people. No pressure! Ha! Each stitch had to be perfect, but honestly, I do that anyway for all my products because I'm a perfectionist and control freak. In this case that's a good thing, right?

Reviewing Product Packaging

Nothing kicks your buns into gear to do a hard and fast review of your product and its packaging than preparing gifts for celebrities!

I had to ask myself a few questions:
  • Does my packaging clearly portray the brand and its message?
  • Does it describe the product?
  • Does it entice the customer to want to use it?
  • If given as a gift, does it tell the receiver what it is and what's so great about it?
  • Does it direct customers to your website, & where to find you in social media?

I always figured if someone bought my product, they already knew what it was, so no need to include much more information about it since they already knew what it was! Right? WRONG! (loud buzzer sound)

As I began reviewing my packaging, all at once I thought of it in a different way: What if I was giving my product to someone who had never seen it before? (i.e. gift giving). Oops! Time to regroup.

get your etsy products to celebrities like oprah and gayle king
I created a special product label for Oprah and Gayle because I wanted them to know this was a special package made this just for them, and included updated product inserts with a better description of Fairface skincare Washcloths™ and what makes them special and unique.

This experience, giving these Fairface Washcloths™ Combo Package of 4 gift sets to Oprah and Gayle, not only gave me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hand deliver a product (that is my heart and soul), to 2 people I admire and love, but to also give me valuable insight into my marketing and branding efforts.
(P.S. - That's why its important not to spend loads of money on marketing materials as you are growing your product so you can change and evolve as needed without wasting a lot of money on tossing and updating marketing materials.)

I'm so grateful for a friend willing to go out on a limb for me, as well as carry some extra bulk in her purse, to get these packages to Oprah and Gayle this weekend!

Fingers crossed they'll love their new Fairface Washcloths™ as much I and my customers do! Who wouldn't love a soft and soothing skin care facecloth? Hope they will say the same! ♥

Etsy International Shipping 101: Tutorial

how to ship etsy international without fear
{image: Fairface Washcloths now shipping worldwide!}
For the first couple years running my etsy shop, I have shipped U.S. only. I know how to put my product in a package, label it and bring it to the post office. Done. No worries (for the most part).

In the back of my mind, however, I've thought about all the people around the world I was missing. I've had several potential customers outside the U.S., but I turned them down because international shipping sounded too daunting and unpredictable.

So many what-ifs...and I can be a worrier. What if my package gets lost? How will I ever find it again? What if my package gets stolen? What if someone tries to scam me? What if I fill out the customs form wrong?  What if, what if, what if.

As I've tried to push myself out of my comfort zone this year and grow my shop and products, I've decided to take things to the next level & ship internationally. I'm not going to let the "what if's" ruin my what can be.

And look at these stats from Fed Ex:

International Shipping for small businesses, according to FedEx:

"If you’re only selling in the U.S., you’re only reaching a small share of your potential customers.  According to the U.S. Commercial Service, 95 percent of the world’s consumers live outside of the U.S."
If I hadn't seen a reason to ship globally before, this is certainly convincing!

Etsy International Shipping: made easy

*Are you an etsy shop owner and see potential in shipping worldwide? Make sure to check out the etsy forums where tons of etsy shop owners, like yourself, are helping to take the mystery out of what international shipping is all about.

Ship Etsy International and use an electronic scale for accurate weights
{image: supplies for International Shipping: electronic scale}
Step 1: Buy a digital scale. I found one at Harbor Freight on sale + a 20% off coupon + a free tape measure with purchase. Score!

Step 2: Weigh your products with all packaging and paperwork. Your weight needs to be accurate (not like your drivers license. ha!). Round up to the nearest ounce (i.e. item 3.2 oz, pay for 4 oz).

Step 3: Check the ship-to country's import laws. Make sure the country you're shipping to accepts your products. Some countries have strict import laws. See: Shipping Policies by Country: USPS

Step 4: Create Shipping Policies. Be sure to state in your shop's shipping policies, that you are not responsible for import taxes, customs fees, etc. that may be required upon package arrival, for international customers. I've heard shipping through FedEx or UPS results in high charges on the customer end once the package is received, but USPS does not.

Step 5Calculate shipping. The general consensus seems to be, if your item is under 4 pounds, First Class International gives you the best rates. Once you have weighed your shipment, check the International Price Calculator from USPS to see what the cost will be.

Step 6: Add shipping locations to your product's page. Some shops start by shipping to a few countries instead of opting for "Everywhere Else". Price shipping based on the item's weight with all packaging, + handling fees, and insurance (if you choose - see step 8). Some etsy sellers price shipping costs high enough to ensure coverage for the most expensive country, but offer their customers refunds for overages.

Step 7: Shipping labels & Customs Forms. Using Etsy shipping labels is not only convenient, it's *cheaper* so you can pass your savings on to your customers! Yay! PLUS, Etsy international shipping includes customs forms so it takes the guess work out of what you need to fill out! *Some countries require a 2nd customs form on the outside of the package also. Be sure to check that country's policies. I've heard you can use PayPal labels too - not sure if they offer insurance or customs forms, but check them out if you'd like.

Step 8: 3rd party insurance. Purchasing insurance for your shipment is to your benefit in case the package gets lost or stolen and you have to re-send or refund the customer. It is our obligation as sellers to make sure our customer gets what they paid for. 3rd party insurance (through Etsy's U-Pick or places like Insurepost.com or ShipSurance.com: covers item & shipping) costs under $2 for $100. On the flip side, the customer can submit their own claim to their credit card or paypal, but it makes sense to offer that service & take care of the customer. *Insurance is available to most countries when purchasing Etsy shipping labels, so it's very convenient to purchase (*Also see: Etsy seller protection for a list of countries covered by direct check-out purchases). Many sellers say, "If my 3rd party insurer will cover it, I will ship there." Which seems to be a safe route. You decide.

Step 9: Drop off your package at the post office (or arrange to have it picked up). Some 3rd party insurance companies require you to have a receipt from the post office, showing you dropped it off, so check with your insurer. For most domestic shipments, I simply do all the postage at home and drop the package in the post office mail bin. No lines!

And that's all folks!

Is International Shipping still intimidating? Maybe a little, but it certainly isn't as ominous as it once was. It's not as easy as slapping on a label, but it may just be the best decision you ever made. I'll let you know what I think in a few months. ha!

*If you're experienced with shipping internationally and have any suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment to benefit us all!

Cotton Duck 101: Chevron Pillow Cases

Throw pillows in chevron print, made from cotton duck fabric
{Image: Cotton Duck Chevron Pillows: Chartreuse/White}
I've been a sewing maniac lately! So many new things in my shop, & a few snapped up so quickly, the fabric had barely left the sewing machine. I'm on fire people!

The tricky thing about making decorative pillow cases for other people, is that I secretly want all of them for myself.

As you know, Chevron Prints, in all their bold colors, are really popular right now and can update & bring life to any room in the house.

I decided to make a couple sets for my shop, out of screen printed cotton duck fabric, and yes, I fell in love with them immediately.

100% Screen Printed Cotton Duck
Medium Weight Black 100% Cotton Back
What is cotton duck fabric? Chevron throw pillows made from canvas
{Decorative Pillows: Chevron Black & White}

Sigh.
I love these bold colors!!

I've found colorful chevron prints in light-weight cotton, twill and cotton duck. Light-weight cotton would work for bedroom throw pillows, but twill and cotton duck are a more durable, heavier-weight fabric, perfect for couch pillows or throw pillows for family room chairs.  I considered twill, but the colors were a little muted, so when I ran across this bold screen printed cotton duck, I knew I'd found exactly what I was looking for!

So what is 100% Cotton Duck Fabric?

Cotton Duck is a strong, durable fabric, resistant to tearing and snagging, and is often better known by its more common name, Canvas (doesn't sound nearly as fancy, does it?). Not all cotton duck is created equal, however, since it comes in a variety of weights. The cotton duck that I used for my chevron pillow covers, was medium weight (~6.5 oz); great for curtains, accent pillows, bed skirts, slipcovers, upholstery, purses & totes.

At its heaviest weight, you've probably seen cotton duck and didn't even know it - on tennis shoes, hammocks, cots, tents or sandbags. Now that's some durability!

Where does Duck Fabric Come From?

Duck fabric comes from the Dutch word, "doek", meaning “linen canvas.” In order to distinguish it from traditional duck (linen), its termed "cotton duck".

Duck Fabric + Duct Tape

You know our old friend, Duct Tape? It's related to Duck Fabric. What? Who knew? Some people even call duct tape, duck tape, but don't do it around me. hahahaha Turns out, the original duct tape was made from duck fabric, with an added adhesive.

Now you have a little conversation starter for the dinner table!

Summer fun recap weeks 1-3

As of today, we're 4 weeks in on summer break. Once July 1 hit, man, time starts to roll! Here's a quick peek at what I've been up to since school got out.

day trip from seattle to whidbey island: see beaches and collect shells

I started my summer off with a bang and knocked off one of my new year's resolutions with a free "Learn to play the ukulele" class.

Turns out, my sausage fingers may not be cut out for such a small instrument. I can play the guitar, but the uke's neck is so skinny that my fingers cramp up and overlap on the strings. I could play it with a little practice, but this might be all she wrote for the ukulele. At least I tried!

******************************

Next up? A ferry ride over to Whidbey Island for a relaxing anniversary get-away. It was so fun to take a couple of days to explore ocean beaches and beach side-towns!

Stops included: Coupeville * Ft. Ebey State Park * Point Partridge * Double Bluff Beach
* Useless Bay * Possession Point * Cultus Bay

Since it was low, low tide (due to the super moon) the beaches were filled with uncovered treasures: shells of all shapes and sizes, tide pools alive with scattering crabs, sea anemones and sand dollars. Pure heaven.

What to do on Whidbey island: visit seaside towns, beaches and collect shells

vacation for shannon sews

Family Time!
My brother, his wife and baby moved to Washington and my other brother, his wife and 2 kids came for a week-long visit. It was so much fun to have them all here!

Part of the time we spent around Seattle, going to Golden Gardens Beach, Pike Place Market, the Gum Wall (yes, we even added our own, eew), and the Great Wheel (I was too chicken to go).

The last half of the week we headed east over the mountains to my parent's country ranch where we played with babies in the front yard pool, competed at corn hole and badminton, and celebrated my husband's birthday (with bananas foster). At the end of the week we wrapped it all up with a small town 4th of July parade.

Good times and great memories!!

seattle must sees: gum wall, pike place market, ferris wheel, waterfront

When I got my eyes dilated I couldn't see the entire day, it was blurry for 6 hours
{Edited from Pinterest}

By week 3, it was time to get back to business. Time to make those appointments I'd been putting off (dentist, eye doc, etc.), run forgotten errands, and sew new items for my etsy shop.

My eye appointment turned out to be quite an adventure. They dilated my eyes so much I couldn't see the entire day. I literally looked like those owl cupcakes. It was insane.

Here's a peek at what I've finished so far, for my shop:

chevron green white pillow cases and baby blankets new on etsy
{SSorensenDesigns.etsy.com}

But this week wasn't all business. We celebrated my nephew's birthday and spent an afternoon at the pool. The weather this summer in Seattle has been divine!! Oh yes, we'll take it!

I don't even want to count how many days are left of summer vacation, but I don't think we've even reached the half-way mark. So I just have one more thing to say:

Dear Target,

Please don't squash our summer dreams by running commercials for school supplies in mid-July. Could you at least hold off until August 1st? Kthxbye.

~Hope you're enjoying your summer!~

Why buy Handmade? {Reasons you should}

Buy Handmade for yourself or gifts for someone else.
We are the creators

the architects

the authors and fabricators

We are the inventors, the planners and producers

We are the originators, the engineers and the designers.

We are the makers of handmade

As a maker and seller of things handmade, I can tell you there's a little bit of magic that goes into everything I create. An intermingling of dreams and imagination, a dash of determination and a lot of heart. To me, it's personal.

Each item I make is made with another in mind, for one day it will find a place in someone's home. And being a perfectionist at heart? Only my best craftsmanship will do.

And for the buyer or the giver? It's personal too. Anyone can run to a retail outlet and find something that 3,856 other people have, but handmade? Handmade is one of a kind. It's like a snowflake. No two are exactly the same. And that's what makes it so special. That's what makes it so unique. That's what makes it so personal.

Our world is made up of so many amazingly creative people. It's a shame we don't know most of them, but they are out there. If you look. With their little shops, sharing the things they've created with the world.

They are people like you and like me. Instead of long commutes, it's a walk down the hall. Instead of large board rooms, they're small spaces. Instead of 8-5, they're open all hours. Instead of a marketing team, it's one creative mind. Instead of machinery, two hands carefully put it together. You're supporting a craft. You're supporting hard work. You're supporting a family. You're supporting a dream.

And I've got to tell you, there's no better compliment than someone thinking enough of what I've made to buy it and have it in their home. Sheer bliss.

So the next time you're looking for a gift for someone you love? Your mom, dad, niece, nephew, son, daughter, a new mom, a cute baby, a friend's birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, a holiday, share a little magic and shop handmade. It's like mailing a letter, instead of an email. And these days it means that much more.♥

.............................................................................

Colorful Baby Onesies

My Ink blot Baby Onesies have been so popular, I decided to put a few more in the shop. Instead of the black designs like I did more recently, I decided to do layered color. Aren't they cheerful?

uniquely designed baby onesies make great gifts

This one reminds me of Cherries. I like the combination of deep pink and Indian turquoise.

Wearable Art Baby Clothing

The swirls of this one reminds me of the pumpkin vines as they magically swirled to become Cinderella's carriage. I think the lavender and Indian turquoise compliment each other. Soft and sweet.

Hand painted Onesie by designer

I can't help but immediately see a court jester in this one. Or the face of a clown? Whatever it is, this deep pink and lamp black design makes me think "happy".

Onesie for baby shower gift

This one is tricky. I see either frogs or colorful caterpillars. The ocean blue and lamp black make a nice combination.

Gift for new mother painted Onesie in blue and black

It's funny how a design can jump right out at you. At first this light and dark purple design reminded me of little purple pansies. But all-at-once I saw the face of a smiling teddy bear. Do you see it too? Now that's all I see when I look at it - no more pansies.

Each of these "abstract art" painted Onesies are now in my shop. The feedback I've received is that they make really fun and unique baby gifts. Hope they make someone (or someone's baby!) happy too. ♥

Baby Bibs: Ink Blot Style

Don't tell me you didn't see this coming.
You knew I'd find something else to put an ink blot on.
And I did.

Introducing the newest ink blots in the shop.

::Ink Blot Baby Bibs::
All the smart babies are wearing them.

All bibs are made with soft white jersey on the front, and absorbent white terrycloth on the back.

And an easy on-off velcro closure.

One of my favorite parts about ink blot designs is figuring out what I see when I'm done.
1. Bunnies dancing
2. Spider smiling
3. People dancing
4. Storm trooper

{What do you see?}

Decorated Baby Onesie Bums

A week just isn't complete without making at least one Ink Blot Onesie.
After I drip and splatter the paint, it's like Christmas to open up the fabric and see what appears!

After the original purple "Orbiting Planets" Onesie was made (front design only), I decided to give it a little extra sumpin sumpin.

Who can resist a cute little decorated Onesie Baby Bum?
I certainly can't. And I figured since they make them with ruffles, why not Ink Blots?

It's kind of a two for one!
A fun little ink blot design on the front.

And a little surprise bum blot on the back.
What do you see?

This Onesie (size 18 months) is available here.

But I couldn't stop with just one. So I made another.

This next one I see a Rabbit on the front and a Tiger on the back
...but maybe that's just me.
What do you see?

This 18 month Ink Blot Onesie is available here.

Have you tried making your own yet? You can always buy yourself an Ink Blot Onesie Kit here. They're more fun that a barrel of monkeys! Or rabbits, or tigers, who knows what you'll come up with?!
