How to Cut Multiple Layers of Fabric Faster: The Electric Fabric Cutter I Use

If you regularly cut multiple layers of fabric, you already know how much time the cutting process can take.

When I first started making Fairface Washcloths, I stacked about four layers of flannel together and cut each square with a handheld rotary cutter. It worked — but as my sewing business grew and I needed to cut more and more fabric, cutting just a few layers at a time became painfully slow.

I needed a faster way to cut fabric in bulk.

That’s when I switched to an electric fabric cutting machine — and it completely changed my cutting process.

The Problem: Cutting Multiple Layers of Fabric Took Too Long

A rotary cutter is great when you’re cutting a few pieces of fabric.

But when you need dozens — or hundreds — of identical pieces, repeatedly cutting a few layers at a time becomes a major bottleneck.

That was exactly what happened to me.

As orders for my Fairface Washcloths increased, I needed to prepare much larger quantities of fabric for sewing. I could sew faster than I could keep up with the cutting.

My little handheld rotary cutter just couldn’t cut it anymore. Pun intended. :)

That meant I could prepare dramatically more pieces of fabric in the same amount of cutting time.

If you sew the same item repeatedly, make products to sell, batch-sew gifts, or simply have a project that requires cutting lots of identical pieces, this is where an electric fabric cutter can be incredibly useful.

Before: Cutting Fabric With a Handheld Rotary Cutter

When I started my business, I would lay approximately four pieces of flannel on top of each other and cut my washcloth squares with a handheld rotary cutter.

There was nothing wrong with that method when I was making smaller quantities.

The problem came when I needed more.

And more.

And more.

Four layers at a time suddenly meant a LOT of repeated cutting.

On a productive day, I might cut around 50 fabric squares by hand.

That was fine in the beginning, but it simply wasn't efficient enough once I began producing my washcloths in larger quantities.

Switching to an electric fabric cutter was a game changer for me.

Instead of cutting just a few pieces at a time, I could work with much thicker stacks of fabric and prepare hundreds and hundreds of pieces for sewing.

That was the difference that mattered.

I wasn't spending nearly as much of my production time doing the same cutting motion over and over again.

I could batch my cutting, prepare a large quantity of pieces, and then move on to sewing.

For someone who was producing the same sewn product repeatedly, that was HUGE.

Why I Think an Electric Fabric Cutter Is Worth It

If you only occasionally cut one or two pieces of fabric, you probably don't need one.

But if you regularly find yourself standing at your cutting table thinking:

“There has to be a faster way to do this…”

this may be the tool you're looking for.

The filter draws in and traps excess moisture, over time the beads dissolve into liquid, and the moisture collects in the base of the container. Once all the beads have dissolved into liquid, you replace the container with a new one.

**I prefer the fragrance free moisture absorbers, but there are options for scents if you choose.

Why I needed a Hysterectomy

There are many reasons why a woman may have a hysterectomy. For me, it was a scary reason. 

After months of difficult symptoms that no one could figure out, a CT scan finally revealed a large grapefruit sized cyst on one of my ovaries that was "suspicious for malignancy".

After lots of worry, crying and praying, my hysterectomy / exploratory surgery day finally arrived and left me with one large vertical scar, 2 less ovaries and 1 less uterus. 

Thankfully, the results of my hysterectomy were benign and the only follow-up I will need is to check my cancer antigen every year to make sure I am cancer-free.

Since I couldn't wear anything that pressed on my belly or hysterectomy incision, I lived in these nightgowns and dresses for weeks! This brand is my very favorite because they are so comfy, stretchy, and soft. I got 3 of them and just kept rotating. I actually wore one of them to my post-op visit because it looked enough like a dress.

3. Long Leg Warmers - Buy now on Amazon

Trust me, you'll need these! Since you can't wear anything pressing on your belly / incision, you'll be wearing nightgowns or dresses that leave your legs exposed. Socks just don't cut it! These are like a warm sweater wrapped around your legs as high as you need them, and keep you feeling snuggly and warm. Ahhh. Best buy!

4. Grabber / Reacher Stick - Buy now on Amazon

This came in handy all the time! It is a very helpless feeling to drop something and not be able to pick it up. I did this over and over again and it was very frustrating until I got one of these grabber/reacher tools. This is another Best Buy for sure!

5. *Soft Face cloths (Buy now on Etsy)

One thing that really comforted me while in the hospital and the first couple weeks after coming home, was to have a warm, soft face cloth to wipe my face with. Since I couldn't bend over the sink for a while, I would use a touch of face wash to rub all over my face and then gently wipe it off with a warm, wet, soft face cloth. Fairface Washcloths are the only cloths I will use on my face and it honestly felt like heaven.

Alternative to Purple Sheets that Saved Me Over $200

What is a cheap alternative or dupe for Purple Mattress Sheets? After some searching, I found the perfect set of sheets that is a great substitute for Purple brand sheets, and saved myself over $200!

While I do love the original Purple brand sheets, I don't love the Purple sheets' shocking price tag, at an astounding $279.00 for a King Set. 

My requirements for finding a good alternative for Purple Mattress Sheets was that they would be:

A) Comfortable and flexible enough to work well with the Purple mattress

B) Soft and high quality

C) Reasonably priced

After reading through many suggestions, I found *this great alternative set of sheets for our Purple mattress (Amazon) for a fraction of the cost, and after just one night I knew I'd found "the one". 

**UPDATE:  I’ve now been using these sheets on our Purple mattress for over a year, and they’re even softer than when we first bought them. The high quality has really held up, they have not pilled, and I recently bought another set! 

I can honestly say, compared to other sheets that claim to be a good option for purple mattresses, these are still the Best Purple Sheet Alternative I would choose over and over again!

• The soft jersey cotton has just enough softness and a little give to work well with my Purple Mattress. It's like sleeping in your favorite t-shirt.
